Install Front License Plate Bracket Rivets

Poking around the Internet, it appears I'm not alone in being disappointed that VW is shipping all the US-bound vehicles with front license plate holders. Mercedes-Benz dealers will inspect and replace the transistors free of charge when the recall begins.

I'm going to try and source some grommets and super glue and see if that will do it. This is a typical plate (as found on a 2000 E430). I went to my Auto Store and bought a kit to install the front license plate onto my car but I. So, anyway, the license plate holder is back on, sans one center rivet. The front license plate bracket and the 4 plastic spreader rivets. Perhaps at the first service I'll have them remove the aero shield and empty the trash. I also noticed that, since the bottom of the car is completely sealed off, trash can accumulate in the grill area. One fell out from behind and it's either on the road now or somewhere in the car. Only I now only have three of the rivet centerpieces. So I resigned myself to keeping the license plate holder on the vehicle. Possible a grommet or something would make it possible for the bumper plugs to fit, but I don't exactly have those handy. They would just fall right out if I put them in there. It wasn't too bad, but the bumper plugs wouldn't cover the damage completely.Īnd then I found that the bumper plugs were too narrow for the holes in the bumper. So with the license plate holder off, I inspected the damage. Eventually I found that I could just pull really hard, and while the whole bumper cover would flex, the bottom rivets eventually came out. Damn damn damn! Plus the rivet couldn't be cut. I thought maybe I could cut the rivet with some angle pliers since they're plastic.and I gouged the paint a little. So I pushed them as far as I could and then pulled on the holder to try and get a look behind it. The bottom turns out there's some kind of foam or something about 1/8' behind the bottom holes, preventing you from being able to push the rivets all the way out. The top two were easy enough once I found something narrow enough to push through the hole. You have to push the middle of the rivet out from the front, and then the holder is supposed to come off. I ordered a set, and got them this weekend.įirst of all, getting the license plate holder off is a PITA. I was hoping that the plugs from would fit. Pre-installed, which means the bumper cover has already been drilled. Guess what my VW ID.4 came with? A front license plate holder. I live in one of the 19 states that doesn't require a front license plate.
